Barely like any some other form of life, fish will need oxygen. Not acquiring lungs, they breathe through their gills, “breathing” within the dissolved oxygen that is present within the water. In a small body of water, such as a home aquarium, the oxygen in that water can be depleted fairly quickly—leaving your fish gasping for air and unable to breathe. It looks like odd for a fish, but if this comes about, they will have suffocated under water.

Filtration - Necessary process to poison free aquarium water
In order to have poison free aquarium water, filtration process is a very important to aquarist. Since most aquarists are aware of the fact that their aquarium water gradually accumulates potentially harmful substances, which eventually poison their fishes. 2006 discus fish breeding part 1Jul 31, 2010
This pair of discuss has 3 attempts with all eggs eaten up, 1 times with few fry coming out but still eaten up at the end. this video is their 5th attempt. some things that I think it may help: - young pairs are less experienced, sometimes looks like they are not in harmony after laying eggs or frightened, then they eat up all eggs, if your pair only has 1 or 2 attempts, you can looking forward to their next attempt. - water change. I keep a 80% water change everyday when they are in a small 2 feet tank. (water is coming from the top-roof water reserve, which is kept for sometime, and singapore tap water is quite soft). but after they lay eggs, i keep 20% water change everyday. - I put 7 disuss with a clearer fish in the small 2 feet tank, with only on-top filters, not decorations at all(during the time I just moved to my new flat) tank is small but really clean. after the 2 lay eggs, I only remove the sucker fish out and the rest discuss is still in, so the competition is still on in the tank. the pair is still the king. but I remove the rest after the fry came out. just to release the stress level of the pair. - food: I feed them frozen blood worms, washed before feeding and some dry flaker food. they have enough food and looks healthy and strong. - no extra lighting, I put the tank near my rear balcony, there is no direct sun light on the tank, so the fish enjoy the nature day-night cycle. - a heater to keep the temp 28'C at night - some luck ;) My 40+ young discus ...

People often say Discus are very difficult to keep! Well that might be true if you don't get the basics right to start with. Once you have understood and put into practice what you know, it is I think, very easy to keep any Discus, wild or tank bred. The following three factors are called the Golden Rules of Discus keeping: Water Quality If your Discus are ill or you have a problem with them, the root cause is nearly always the water quality. The native waters from which the Discus are from, in Brazil is soft and acidic. So it is understandable that we need to replicate this type of water in our home aquarium. A larger volume of water is easier to keep stable than a smaller volume, bear this in mind when you are choosing your tank, in other words get the largest one you possibly can. I assume you are familiar with the Nitrogen Cycle (if not you really need to understand this fully). Discus will not tolerate Ammonia or Nitrite in any amount, and only the bare minimum Nitrate. Make sure the detritus is removed on a daily basis together with any uneaten food, as this will quickly form Ammonia. If you feed beefheart always feed day time, never at night, as there are always some fatty bits that do not get eaten and you don't want that in the tank overnight. Ph is of course very important, as this is the measure of acidity and alkalinity. Ph of 7 is neutral, that is between acid and alkaline. Discus like the Ph between 5.5 and 6.8 and will tolerate 7.0 to 7.4. Heckles like it ...
